Reception

Reception Class forms part of the Foundation Stage and staff work very closely across the phase with Nursery staff and pupils. The phase is integrally linked with the middle and upper phases of the school.

In the first five years, children develop at a faster rate than at any other time. We work hard to embed positive attitudes towards school and learning. In addition, we set high expectations for positive behaviour and aim to build on key concepts.

Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is made up of seven areas of learning.

The prime areas are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

The specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We have a rich and varied curriculum in which the children are encouraged to become the best that they can be. In Reception Class, we promote independence and prepare children for the rest of their school lives.

During the year we have a variety of exciting events to which parents are invited: Read Write Inc Workshops, Christmas Performance, Mothers’ Day Celebration and Reading Together Projects are just some of the many opportunities we offer in order to strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Children enjoy activities in Reception Class and our aim is to foster an enjoyment of life and learning.
